(THE INNS)
What is this about?
It is a traditional party very common in December.
Its beginning is lost in time, but most likely began about 1500’s in Mexico.
It is a celebration in which Joseph and Mary’s Journey through Bethlehem and the difficult to get a place to stay overnight, recreating the Nativity.
Along the recreation, traditionally the Owners House represents the Inns’ Owner which denies and does not recognize the Saint Family which is acted by the guests.
Along the procession, there are lyrics and songs that survived along the years and they are very traditional.
Tiny color candles are given to the procession while they are walking around the neighborhood, and having the pilgrims heading up the Procession.
In the middle of the celebration, a Piñata is presented and is being smacked and banged with a wooden stick. The person in turn, who smacks the piñata, has the eyes covered without any possibility of seeing anything.
The Piñata is a pottery bowl stuffed with fruit and candies, decorated with color paper and with seven cardboard peaks, representing the seven capital sins.
When finally the piñata is cracked and broken, the fruit stuffed falls and the guests jump over to collect whatever is on the floor. That’s the fun part.
In many locations this part is forfeited.
At the end of the party, is giving an small baskets (4 IN tall) with candies known as "colacion" and plastic bags for the fruits collected (Caña de azucar, tejocote, guayaba, mandarina, naranja, jicama, etc).
Along the party it is offered the traditional "Ponche" . This beverage is made with caña de azucar (Saccharum officinarum), guayaba (Guava) and many different fruits. It is served hot in a cup
There are nine days of celebration starting every year on September 16th and ending on Christmas Day (December 25th).
The first days, most likely the friends are invited to the party and the last two days most likely are restricted only to the family members or who is invited to the Christmas dinner.
The tradition has changed over the years and generations.
Nowadays, it is a party which holds the majority of the details but ends up with a packed dance floor and the DJ performing.
